For a minute, I thought I’d take this photo challenge really, really seriously. That I would wax metaphorically about movement, and post a picture of a river or a doorway or a hall, and talk about change and journeys and the symbolic representation of life. Which is all well and good and a valid post.
But that’s not what I want to talk about today.
I wanted today’s photo challenge to be dynamic with in-your-face impact. I didn’t want metaphor today; I wanted speed and agility. Grrrl power. Take no prisoners. And so, for today’s photo challenge, I give you…
Roller derby.

The Pretty Little Skull Crushers (in pink) vs. The Guillotinas (in blue).
Hard to choose who to cheer for with names like that.
The Jingle Brawl was held on my birthday weekend, 2010, Williamsport, PA. Pre-game and intermission entertainment were provided by a punk band (more info about Snakes Are Strong here), and Santa was chased around by two reindeer and wrestled to the ground because he wanted to keep all the candy canes. Selfish Santa, foolish Santa. Derby ladies ain’t gonna stand for that. The day after the Jingle Brawl we went to New York and saw a Rangers game (they won), so all in all it was a sort of “mayhem with blood sports and boots of speed” weekend.
Ladies, that’s what I call getting things done. Thanks for the fine birthday weekend!
This is going to be a great challenge so I encourage everyone to check it out. You can see all the entries here. Or, check out some of the entries that have come up already, below:

I like how you can see movement in stationary things–the turn of the road, the sweep of the clouds. Even the hay wheels look like they’re ready to race each other. Lovely!

The last time I was on rollerblades I ended up flipping entirely around in the air–kids, don’t rollerblade without wristguards. If I hadn’t been wearing them, I would have shattered my wrists. Now I’ll step off my soapbox. And thanks for the pingback.
